Serial Killer Detective Novel:
Brigitte Rath: Detecting Serial Killers. Some thoughts on the plot structure of detective novels featuring serial killers. In: Wiederholen: literarische Funktionen und Verfahren. Hg. von Roger Lüdeke and Inka Mülder-Bach (Münchener komparatistische Studien 7) Göttingen: Wallstein 2006, S. 257–273.
Abstract: “Detectivc novels featuring serial killers have an unusual plot structure: In contrast to the crimc plots of classical dctcctivc novels which concentrate on the solution of one crime, or a complcx of intertwined crimes with one leading to another, the crime plot of a detective novel featuring a serial killer needs to integrate a potentially endless succession of similar events that do not cause further elements. This plot structure deviates significantly from plot structures that are considered typical for narratives; this deviation is moderated by various compensating strategics on two plot levels and on the discourse level. The unusual plot structure is responsible for the characteristics and the specific appeal of these detective novels”.
